Veteran Spotlight
The Veteran Spotlight Program highlights veterans currently buried at the Fort Smith National Cemetery. Elementary/middle school children select a name from a headstone and research the veteran to learn about his/her life and service to our country.
Since the workshop is geared toward older kids (high school only for safety reasons), this program serves as a as way to involve the younger children in our region in Christmas Honors. Each child selects a veteran and then creates a ‘spotlight poster’ that includes information such as:
- A summary of the veteran (who they are, what war they served in, where they served)
- Awards/Honors received
- Photo(s) of the veteran, awards, etc.
- Maps of where they were from or where they served
- Infamous family connections
- What was going on in the world at the time, etc.
It is our hope that this program helps the younger generation learn about those who served this country and have an appreciation for all that they did and sacrificed. Then when in high school, they will have an understanding of the respect that is due to the veterans we are honoring.
